✿ Printed both sides on 350gsm uncoated 100% recycled paper
_____________
For my mum’s 70th birthday, I painted a childhood memory of her sitting at the sewing machine for hours, making clothes for our family. In the painting, she is surrounded by her family in zodiac animal form, quietly keeping her company as she works.
Growing up, my siblings and I wore clothes sewn by her hands, often matching from head to toe. At the time it felt ordinary, sometimes even embarrassing, but with time I’ve come to see those clothes as quiet acts of love and care. Now it’s the grandchildren who wear garments made by their loving Poh Poh. ♡
Being children of immigrant parents, the word “love” was rarely spoken aloud in our home. Instead, it lived in quiet actions, in late afternoons at the sewing machine, in careful stitches, and in the sacrifices that went unspoken. This painting is my way of honouring my mother’s love, expressed through the clothes she made for our family: a love language without words, carried in the steady, rhythmic hum of a sewing machine.
